BIOS
BIOS (aka CMOS settings) stands for Basic Input/Output System.
BIOS refers to the software code embedded on the CMOS (Complementary
metal–oxide–semiconductor) chip on the motherboard, and is run by
your computer's motherboard when first powered on. The function of the
BIOS is to prepare your computer so other attached hardware components
are recognized and configured properly in order to interact with one
another. This BIOS loading process is known as booting up. |

Firmware
Firmware is software code that is embedded in a hardware device chip.
Your hard drives, CD/DVD drives, floppy drives and expansion cards, such
as your graphics card or sound card, all include a programmable firmware
chip that dictates how the device functions optimally with other
hardware components, your operating system and other installed software
programs that use the device. The following file links are for all
optical drives, both current offerings and models available in the past.

by Category
A device driver is a computer software file or files allowing
interaction with internal or peripheral hardware devices. Drivers provide an
optimized command interface to the operating system and software
applications that use the device. |
Chipset:
Chipset drivers are files that inform the
operating system how to properly configure your
motherboard's chipset for specific optimized functionality,
such as for USB, Graphics, memory performance and drive
interface, all in a unified driver package. These
should normally be the first drivers implemented after the
operating system has been installed. |
 |
Intel® Chipset Device Software
Your Intel® G33 Express Chipset drivers inform the operating
system how to properly configure the chipset for specific
functionality such as USB, PCI-Express, memory optimization, IDE/SATA
interface and networking, all in a unified driver package.
These drivers should normally be the first drivers installed
after your operating system is installed. |

Operating System
An operating system (OS) is a bundle of software programs that
allow you to interface with your computer by managing your computer's
hardware and software resources. Current operating systems provide
a graphical user interface (GUI) for ease of operation. The
operating system forms a platform for other system software and for
application software. Windows Vista, Windows XP, DOS and Linux are
examples of an operating system. |
|
Using Windows Update/Microsoft Update |
| Please be sure that your version of Windows is kept current
by downloading and installing all critical operating system
updates on a regular basis. Since the only operating
system offerings available from us include various consumer
versions of Windows XP or Windows Vista, other operating
system updates (such as for an earlier version of
Windows, DOS, Linux, or Server Edition variations)
should be updated according to the particular instructions
for that operating system. |
| |
For Windows XP: |
| |
We recommend that Windows
Update is configured by the Windows Security Center
(Start > Control Panel > Security Center > Automatic
Updates) to automatically check for and notify you of
any new critical updates on a regular basis. You can
set Windows Update to just notify you that updates are
available, to download updates and notify you that
downloaded updates are ready to install, or to automatically
download and install important updates without any user
intervention. You can alternately invoke Windows
Update on demand by clicking on the Start Button, then
selecting All Programs, then clicking on Windows Update or
Microsoft Update. You can also manually browse to the
Windows Update Site from within Internet Explorer:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (hyperlink will
open in a new browser window) |

For Windows Vista: |

We recommend that Windows
Update is configured by the Windows Security Center
(Start > Control Panel > Security > Security Center >
Automatic updating) to automatically check for and
notify you of any new critical updates on a regular basis.
You can set Windows Update to just notify you that updates

Software
by Category
Software, consisting of digital code stored in virtual files, enables a
computer to perform specific tasks, as opposed to the physical
components of the system (hardware). This includes application
software such as a word processor or an antivirus program, which enables
a user to perform a task, and system software such as an operating
system, which enables other software to run properly, by interfacing
with hardware and with other software. |
|
Microsoft® Office: |
|
Using Office Update/Microsoft Update |
| Please be sure that your version of
Microsoft® Office (if installed) is kept current
by downloading and installing all critical Office updates on
a regular basis. |
| |
For Windows XP: |
| |
We recommend that Windows
Update is upgraded to Microsoft Update by installing when
prompted at the Windows Update site. After Windows
Update has been upgraded to Microsoft Update, any available
updates for both Windows and Office, as well as select other
installed Microsoft programs, will be offered automatically.
Microsoft Update can then configured by the Windows Security Center
(Start > Control Panel > Security Center > Automatic
Updates) to automatically check for and notify you of
any new critical updates on a regular basis. You can
set Microsoft Update to just notify you that updates are
available, to download updates and notify you that
downloaded updates are ready to install, or to automatically
download and install important updates without any user
intervention. You can alternately invoke Microsoft
Update on demand by clicking on the Start Button, then
selecting All Programs, then clicking on Windows Update or
Microsoft Update. You can also manually browse to the
Office Update Site from within Internet Explorer:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate (hyperlink will

| |
For Windows Vista: |
| |
We recommend that Windows
Update is configured by the Windows Security Center
(Start > Control Panel > Security > Security Center >
Automatic updating) to automatically check for and
notify you of any new critical updates on a regular basis,
as well as enabling updates for other Microsoft programs,
which will provide you with updates for Office.
Configuring Windows Update to check for additional updates
is easily achieved by clicking on the "Get updates for more
products" dialog box on the Windows Update screen (see
example at right.) You can set Windows Update to just notify you that updates
are available, to download updates and notify you that
downloaded updates are ready to install, or to automatically
download and install important updates without any user
intervention. You can alternately invoke Windows
Update on demand by clicking on the Start Button, then
selecting All Programs, then clicking on Windows Update.

advertising pop-ups, sluggish computer activity, even identify theft through
stolen bank details, passwords, and credit card account numbers. This free

Has
your PC begun acting sluggish? Are strange windows inexplicably popping up
on your screen? Do you have to reboot your computer because of errors and
lockups? The PC Pitstop free online computer checkup and diagnostics tool
can help you detect and fix many common computer problems, as well as ranking
your system's raw performance compared to other similar systems out there.
Our tests check out your PC looking for security risks, Windows configuration
issues, or performance problems. The test uses a small ActiveX utility that you
load before starting the testing; it takes less than a minute to download, and
you're on your way to a faster PC. The full check-up measures disk
fragmentation, checks available system resources, analyzes device drivers,
benchmarks the CPU, memory, video, disk, and Internet connection, looks for
viruses and spyware in running software, and checks for common security
problems. The analysis doesn't change any settings on your PC, and you'll be
able to review our advice before making any changes. Once the tests are
complete, you'll get a detailed report with advice, plus an inventory of your
PC's hardware and software setup. They add new features all the time so
please bookmark the site and return for a visit or tune-up every month--or more
often. |
