Intel® Matrix Storage Manager IDE Drivers (ICH5R targeted chipset)

Intel®Matrix Storage Manager
(ICH5R targeted Controller Chip)
floppy driver installation files for use during or after a clean operating system installation

This utility creates a floppy disk containing driver files which can be used to pre-install the onboard Intel SATA RAID/BASE driver during the initial portion of Windows® installation setup.  You can also use the files to update controller drivers from within Windows if a previous version has already been installed.  Please note that a clean installation of Windows XP requires these files to be ready on a floppy diskette during the initial phase of the Windows installation.

NOTE:  These drivers are not signed for Windows Vista, and Intel® currently has no plans to release official Vista drivers for the Intel 875P chipset.  Your system should run fine in a non-RAID setup with Vista, but RAID driver support with this chipset is not supported.

  • This software should only be used on your system if you have SATA hard drives on one of the applicable controller hubs (listed below).  If you are using only Parallel ATA (IDE) hard drive(s), you do not need to install these drivers.

  • If you are not using a RAID array, but are installing Windows on the drive(s) connected to the onboard Intel SATA controller hub, only install the drivers for the hard drive controller during a clean OS installation, using F6 (for Windows XP installation) to install drivers from floppy during the OS installation.

  • Hardware RAID arrays should be created by accessing the separate Intel RAID BIOS by pressing the Ctrl+I keys when prompted upon starting or rebooting your computer.  If the operating system is to be installed on drives configured as RAID 0, RAID 1, or RAID 10, you should create the hardware RAID array before installing your operating system.  You will only see the Intel RAID BIOS screen if you have enabled RAID support in your motherboard's BIOS settings.

  • If you are not sure whether or not you require this software, please contact technical support for clarification.

Installation Details (download link follows below)
If you are installing the operating system onto a RAID volume or applicable Intel® SATA controller, you should pre-install the RAID or BASE driver using the method described below:

  1. Read and agree to the license agreement (text file will open in a separate window) for the use of these drivers supplied by Intel®.

  2. Insert an undamaged standard 1.44 MB floppy disc into your floppy drive.

  3. Execute the F6flpy32.exe file after you have downloaded it below. The floppy creator will format and write the needed files to your floppy disc.  You may have to try to run the installation again if any error message appears related to the status of the floppy disc.

  4. Ensure that the following 8 files are located on the root directory of your floppy disc:
    1. iaahci.cat
    2. iaahci.inf
    3. iastor.cat
    4. iastor.inf
    5. iastor.sys
    6. license.txt
    7. readme.txt
    8. txtsetup.oem

  5. Label the floppy disc you've just created "Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver Diskette".

  6. At the beginning of the operating system setup, press F6 to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver (Windows XP).  Note: This prompt for Windows XP appears at the beginning of the installation routine and only appears for a few moments, so watch for it closely.  Setup will temporarily continue loading drivers and then you will be presented with a message stating, 'Setup could not determine the type of one or more mass storage devices installed in your system'.  You will then be prompted with a screen to load support for mass storage device(s).

  7. When prompted, select 'S' to Specify Additional Device.

  8. When prompted, insert the floppy disk you created and press enter.

  9. At this point you should be presented with the following selection (possibly more), depending upon your particular system:

    1. Intel(R) 82801ER SATA RAID Controller (Desktop ICH5R)

Highlight the selection listed above, then press enter (see below for the correct controller applicable for your particular system.)

  10. Press enter again to continue. Leave the floppy disk in the system until the next reboot as the software will need to be copied from the floppy disk again when setup is copying files.

IMPORTANTPlease follow the Windows Installation prompt to eject the floppy disc before the system reboots.
When the system reboots for the first and subsequent times during Windows installation from a CD, you may see a prompt to "Press any key to boot from CD."  DO NOT PRESS a key at this point, as the OS installation will have already copied the needed installation files to your hard drive, and needs to be booted from your hard drive during this portion of the install routine.

  11. During Windows setup, create a partition and file system on the hardware-based RAID 0 or RAID 1 volume or BASE hard drive as you would any physical disk.
The size of the RAID 0 (striped) volume is the combined capacity of the two disk drives if they are of the same capacity. If they differ in capacity, your RAID 0 volume will be twice the size of the smaller of the two disk drives.  If you have a RAID 1 (mirrored) array, the size of the RAID 1 volume is only the capacity of one of the two disk drives if they are of the same capacity. If they differ in capacity, your RAID 1 volume will be the size of the smaller of the two disk drives.

When clicking on the file link, It is preferable to save the file to your hard drive when prompted to open the file from it's current location or save it.  You can then click the downloaded file and go through the installation routine as prompted by the file.
